Day 7: Saying No To Control

IMG_2357

When I don’t know how things are going to turn out and I feel totally helpless with more questions than answers.  I come up with every scenario I can of the way things will turn out and this makes me feel a shallow bit of calm.  For just a few seconds I can roll over and get some sleep because i know “I have options”.

Example:  If we can’t find another job by (insert date) then we can just go to seminary.  Yes, thats what we will do – go to seminary (we meaning my husband).  Then we can stay in Raleigh and not need to move and Josiah won’t miss his friends and I won’t lose our deposit at the preschool. Thank you – goodnight.

Yes, then all is well with the world cause almighty Sandy has “a plan”.

It is wise to plan and think through different options but when we use these plans as ways to be in control then we are not resting on the sovereignty and care of God.  We are trusting ourselves.  We are, by our actions, telling God – no, bother – I got this.

When change and uncontrollable things seem to be all around us our nature is to try to control SOMETHING because we feel so out of control ourselves.

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21

In the midst of the change and transition you are in right now, I encourage you to let go of your tight grip on things.  Open your hand and surrender it all to the Lord and His Fatherly Sovereignty to take care of you.

Exchange your manufactured peace for His Sovereign rest.  This may be a daily, hourly, minute by minute exchange but our return is great. We grow in trusting our Father and gain a peace that surpasses all human understanding.

What things do you tend to try to control when life seems so out of control?

In what ways could the Lord be calling you to loosen your grip on control daily?
